South Africa asks Brazil to support its candidate for IMF chief
PRETORIA, June 4 (Itar-Tass) -- South Africa has asked Brazil to
support its candidate for the highest post in the International Monetary
Fund. As the news agency SAPA said on Friday, the theme of supporting the
ex-finance minister, Trevor Manuel, was discussed during a phone
conversation between South Africa's President Jacob Zuma and his Brazilian
counterpart, Dilma Rousseff.
"Zuma, who recalled he had discussed the matter with representatives
of other leading developing countries, told Rousseff that he advocated
greater representation of the developing countries in the IMF," SAPA said.
The president of Brazil, for her part, indicated that her country
would not make a choice until all applicants for the vacant post of the
IMF managing director were named. Earlier, France and Mexico asked Brazil
to support their candidates.
