STUDENTS REFUSING TO RETURN HOME MUST REPAY PSD SCHOLARSHIP

JERANTUT (Bernama) - Students sponsored by the Public Service Department (PSD) who have completed their studies abroad but refuse to return home to work will be asked to repay the scholarship together with interest.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said the Cabinet would study the cases based on the existing law to carry out follow-up action.

"If the Cabinet agrees, the students working abroad and traced by the PSD must repay the expenses incurred including interest," he told reporters here Sunday.

He said most of those who were reluctant to return home were students who studied in inversities in Europe and the United States who received PSD scholarships amounting to between RM400,000 and RM1.2 million each. (US$1=RM3.05)

He said the government had allocated about RM1.2 billion to sponsor 1,500 students who were studying abroad for the past several years.
