MINISTER TO HIGHLIGHT M'SIA'S INVESTMENT ATTRACTIVENESS AT WIEF IN KAZAKHSTAN
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Minister of International Trade and Industry Mustapa Mohamed will highlight Malaysia's attractiveness as an investment destination at the 7th World Islamic Economic Forum (WIEF) from June 7-9 in Astana, Kazakhstan.
The WIEF aims to increase economic cooperation and business partnership among Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) member states.
The theme of the forum this year is "Globalizing Growth: Connect, Compete, Collaborate," MITI said in a statement Sunday.
Mustapa would also speak on the recent initiatives undertaken by the government, including the New Economic Model and Economic Transformation Programme during the international forum.
The three-day forum which involves participation of Heads of States and Ministers also includes specific sessions for businesswomen and young leaders and an exhibition.
Participation at this forum illustrates Malaysia’s strong desire to increase trade and economic ties with OIC member states as well as further economic cooperation and understanding between OIC member states, MITI said.
To date, a total of 11 Malaysian companies representing various industries will be participating in the exhibition.
Malaysia’s total trade with OIC countries rose to US$12.2 billion between January and March this year from US$8.1 billion in the same period in 2010.
Among the major items traded were palm oil, petroleum and petroleum
products, telecommunication equipment and electrical machines.
Total investments by OIC countries in Malaysia amounted to US$4.8 billion from 1980–2010 with Indonesia, Iran, United Arab Emirates (UAE), Pakistan, Lebanon and Saudi Arabia being the major investors, said MITI.
