IATA AGM KICKS OFF IN SINGAPORE TO DISCUSS VITAL INDUSTRY ISSUES

SINGAPORE (Bernama) - The International Air Transport Association (IATA) annual general meeting (AGM), which begins here today, promises to be eventful with 700 leaders from the US$600 billion global aviation industry spending the next two days locked in intense discussions over the industry' most important issues.

IATA Director-General and Chief Executive Officer Giovanni Bisignani said after record-breaking profits last year, 2011 opened with a series of crisis and shocks unprecedented even for aviation.

"Rising oil prices, political unrest, natural disasters, human tragedies and even another volcano eruption have all challenged this industry. We will have lots to discuss in Singapore," he said in a stament.

Some of the issues to be highlighted include the state of the industry address by Bisignani and the release of a new industry financial outlook.

Vision 2050, an initiative launched by Bisignani at last year's IATA agm to identify the drivers of aviation's success by looking ahead four decades, will be another focus of delegates' discussions.

A weekend retreat with 35 strategic thinkers, held in Singapore earlier this year, challenged and refined the vision, which will be presented at the meeting.

Singapore Deputy Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam will open the IATA meeting and World Air Transport Summit.

Hosted by Singapore Airlines, this is the third time the Lion City will host the IATA agm.

The first was in 1976 followed by in 2004 where IATA launched an initiative to modernise industry processes which resulted in conveniences such as e-ticketing, common-use kiosks and bar-coded boarding passes.
