MP Views Yemeni President's Departure as Latest US Failure in Region

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian legislator opined that escape of Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh will boost regional nations' morale, adding that the event was another victory for Tehran and a third failure for Washington.
"Ali Abdullah Saleh's escape was another failure for the US and Saudi Arabia, because he acted in line with the trans-regional strategies of the US and regional strategies of the Saudi Arabia," Head of the Foreign Relations Committee of the Iranian parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Heshmatollah Falahatpisheh stated.

Falahatpisheh added that the fall of Saleh in Yemen was the third big failure for US and Saudi Arabia's policies in the region after the overthrow of the Egyptian and Tunisian dictators, Hosni Mubarak and Zine El Abidine Ben Ali in Tunisia.

"The US and Saudi Arabia tried to change the course of the regional developments but even efforts to deviate regional developments did not prevent Saleh's escape and the fall of the dictatorship in Yemen," the lawmaker reiterated.

Protesters in Yemen are celebrating the fall of the Yemeni dictatorial regime after President Ali Abdullah Saleh escaped to Saudi Arabia.

Saleh, who was wounded in an attack on his compound, flew on Saturday to Saudi Arabia for medical treatment and Vice President Abduraboo Mansur Hadi has taken over Saleh's duties.

The Saudi royal court said on Sunday that Saleh arrived in Saudi Arabia along with other top Yemeni officials to be treated for wounds they suffered in Friday's rocket attack on the presidential palace.

Hundreds of thousands of people have turned out for near daily demonstrations in Yemen's major cities since late January, calling for an end to corruption and unemployment and demanding the ouster of Saleh, who has been in office since 1978.
