Lawmaker Cautions about West's Plot to Undermine Uprisings in Region
TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent member of the Iranian parliament on Monday renewed Iran's support for the regional nations' demands, and warned that the West, Washington in particular, is seeking to undermine the recent popular uprisings in the Middle-East and North Africa.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran can invite popular leaders of the regional revolutions to brief them on the dimensions of a US plot to cause deviation in the popular uprisings in the region," Deputy Head of the parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Esmail Kowsari stated.
The Iranian parliamentarian further pointed out that the commission renders its full support to the regional revolutions.
"The National Security [and Foreign Policy] Commission played a key role in the country's diplomatic arena by issuing a statement in support of the popular uprisings in the region, taking a stance against efforts by regional dictators to crack down on and kill people, holding numerous meetings with Iran's Foreign Ministry and stressing the need for the government to take a clear stand vis-a-vis the regional developments," he was quoted by MNA as saying.
Kowsari went on to say that the commission has already issued a statement in support of the regional revolutions, but intends to release a new one as well.
On Saturday, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei cautioned that the US has initiated efforts to hijack popular uprisings in the region and derail the Islamic awakening in the Middle-East and North Africa.
"The United States does not do anything in the interests of regional nations. Whatever they have done so far has been against regional nations," Ayatollah Khamenei said, addressing a large crowd of Iranian people at the mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, South of Tehran.
The Leader urged Muslim countries to remain vigilant in the face of the Western plots.
The Leader further underlined that Iran throws its weight behind all popular anti-US movements in the region.
In recent months, a wave of revolutions and anti-government uprisings has swept the Arab world.
In January, a revolution in Tunisia ended the 23-year ruling of former President Zine El Abidine Ben Ali.
In February, another Arab revolution led to the ouster of former Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak after three decades of his authoritarian rule.
Other revolutions, then, erupted in Libya, Yemen and Bahrain, while other anti-government unrests have started in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Oman, Kuwait and Algeria.
