Japan, India to continue seeking nuclear cooperation accord
BUDAPEST, June 6 Kyodo -
Japanese Foreign Minister Takeaki Matsumoto and his Indian counterpart S.M. Krishna agreed Monday to continue talks between the two countries for a nuclear cooperation agreement aimed at allowing Japan to export nuclear power technology and equipment.
The ministers agreed in their meeting on the sidelines of the Asia-Europe Meeting of foreign ministers in Hungary to restart a negotiation that started in June last year.
For Japan to formally enact a bilateral pact on a government-backed program to transfer technology and equipment needed to build a nuclear power plant, a nuclear cooperation accord needs to clear parliament. Similar talks with such countries as Vietnam and Turkey have stalled since Japan's nuclear crisis broke out in March.
While agreeing to enhance strategic dialogues on security and maritime safety issues, the ministers also agreed to accelerate working-level discussions for the Japan-India free trade agreement slated to take effect on Aug. 1.
