Iran Renews Call for Free Referendum in Palestine

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Tuesday called for a free referendum in the entire Palestinian lands (including those under the Israeli occupation) to determine the fate of the country.
"Our solution to the Palestinian issue is clear and democratic. A free referendum must be held in Palestine to be participated by all Palestinians to determine the type of government in this country," Ahmadinejad said at a press conference in response to a question about Iran's reaction and stance on the establishment of a Palestinian state along Israeli borders as announced by the UN.

Yet, the Iranian president reiterated that establishment of a Palestinian state alongside the territories occupied by the Zionist regime would never mean an endorsement of the Israeli occupation.

"Establishment of a Palestinian state would not negate the rights of the people of this country," he continued.

"I am confident that Palestinian leaders would vigilantly and intelligently continue dealing with this issue, and the Iranian nation stands beside the Palestinian nation," President Ahmadinejad added.

The long-time debated plan for the establishment of two separate, but adjacent, Palestinian and Israeli states was once against raised by the West and the Palestinian Fatah group after thirteen Palestinian groups including, Fatah and Hamas, signed a landmark unity deal ending their long-running division in May.

Prior to the agreement, the Islamic movement Hamas was at loggerheads with Fatah, headed by Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, since Hamas won the parliamentary elections in January of 2006. After winning the elections, Hamas took control of the Gaza Strip ending months of bloody conflict with Fatah allied security forces.

According to internal sources, the agreement includes formation of a caretaker government until elections take place in both the West Bank and Gaza.

After the US-led West renewed its efforts to establish a Palestinian state outside the Israeli occupied territories, Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei dismissed the US and West's Middle-East peace plan as useless, and reiterated that Palestine should remain undivided and be returned to the Palestinians.

"Palestine is inseparable and it belongs to the Palestinians undivided," Ayatollah Khamenei said, addressing a large crowd of Iranian people at the mausoleum of the late Founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, South of Tehran on Saturday.

"They (enemies) wished to wipe Palestine off the world map, while they were mistaken. Palestine will remain and will not be eliminated," the Leader underscored.

"Palestine will return to the arms of Islam, without any doubt," Ayatollah Khamenei stated.
