Analyst Views Iran's Independence as Root Cause of West's Animosity
TEHRAN (FNA)- Professor Paul Sheldon Foote believes that Iran's independence-seeking approach after the 1979 Islamic Revolution is the root cause of the western animosity towards Tehran.
"Iran has become the target of the neo-conservatives (neo-Trotskyites), Zionists, and others because it has dared to become independent, Iran does not want to be cheated by America and others by selling its oil for dollars," Professor Paul Sheldon Foote said in an interview with FNA.
Sheldon noted the recent uprisings in the region, and said the Middle East has been ripe for this unrest for many years. Fifteen years ago, when I was a professor at Sultan Qaboos University, I warned many Omanis that this unrest would come even to Oman. While the exact reasons for the unrest vary by country, there are some common themes: (a) autocrats or dictators who claim to be Muslims (b) the perversion of Islam by the autocrats or dictators to mean submission to the autocrats or dictators rather than submission to Allah (c) foreign interference.
"In Egypt, many in the world are waiting to see if Egypt opens the Rafah Crossing to Gaza. If not, then everyone will know that the Egyptian Revolution has been a fraud. Saudi Arabia's involvement in Bahrain and its support for terrorist organizations such as the MEK raises questions outside the Muslim world as to why truly religious Muslims could ever support Saudi Arabia's leaders as the keepers of the holiest places of the faith. Long ago, Ayatollah Khomeini noted correctly that Mecca and Medina should be under the control of the Islamic leaders of the world, not of the political leaders of Saudi Arabia," he added.
"In the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC) countries, more than half of the employees are foreigners. The people of the PGCC countries are second-class citizens in their own countries. By contrast, Iran has become the target of the neo-conservatives (neo-Trotskyites), Zionists, and others for many reasons, such as: (a) Iran has dared to become independent. Iran does not want to be cheated by America and others by selling its oil for dollars. (b) Iran does not want to be cheated by the West anymore. For example, in 1872, Nasir al-Din Shah, granted a concession to Baron Julius de Reuter granting him much of Iran's economic wealth for little money. Iranian history (and the history of some of other countries in the region) is filled with such examples of Western countries being able to steal resources for little or no money.
American policy has not changed towards Iran. While some Iranians had hoped that the election of President Obama would mean change because Obama's father was a Muslim, they realized quickly their error when Obama appointed Hillary Clinton as Secretary of State. During the 2008 presidential election, Hillary Clinton threatened to obliterate Iran. How many other political leaders in the world have been so evil as to threaten to kill every man, woman, and child in a country? Obama is a servant of the neo-conservatives (neo-Trotskyites) and of the Zionists."
Asked about the role played by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in the regional developments, specially in Libya, Sheldon said, "Since 1949, the original purpose of NATO (according to its first Secretary General Lord Ismay) was to keep Russia out of Europe, keep America in Europe, and keep the Germans from starting another world war. Recent attempts to expand the membership of NATO and to claim a new objective of opposing terrorism have been less than convincing. In the current military action against Libya, few of the NATO members are involved actively because it is not in their interests to be involved. NATO has become a dangerous organization similar to ones described by George Orwell in his book 1984, a warning about totalitarian organizations controlling the world."
