MALAYSIA TO HOST HUMAN GENOMICS MEETING IN 2015
KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) -- Malaysia will host the prestigious annual
Human Genome Meeting (HGM) for the first time, organised by the Human Genome
Organisation (HUGO), at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) in March 2015.
The Dean of the School of Medical Science, Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM),
Professor Abdul Aziz Baba said themed "Transforming Human Genomics for A
Sustainable Tomorrow", it will lay a foundation on the scientific dynamics in
formulating a future agenda in this field.
The meeting will play an instrumental role in promoting Malaysia as a leader
in the global bioinformatics and genomics research industry, expediting
scientist breakthroughs in the medical, agricultural and industrial sectors.
Moreover, the aim of this event is to update and increase knowledge in the
ever-evolving fields of human genome research, and is always considered a major
event for both renowned scientist and young investigators.
"The international meeting will enhance the research networking between our
local scientists and the world's leading scientists from many different fields
of human genomics and provide a platform to share knowledge and experiences," he
told the media at the official announcement of the host country for Human Genome
Meeting 2015 here Wednesday.
"The HGM 2015 is expected to attract more than 1,000 delegates comprising
researchers, academicians, clinicians, students, and others in science and human
genome industry to Malaysia," he said.
Consultant Pediatrician and Clinical Geneticist, School of Medical Science
USM, Associate Professor Dr Zilfalil Alwi said the event can provide a platform
of ideas and interaction to propel human genomics studies and practices to
another level by embarking on future trends of human genomics.
Dr Zilfalil Alwi in his presentation here today said every organism has a
genome including human genome, plant genome, bacterial genome.
Genome is a gene that contains all of the biological information needed to
build and maintain a living example of that organism.
HUGO will collaborate with USM, the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE),
KLCC and Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB) in making HGM 2015 a success, he said.
HGM has traveled to Europe, Asia, Australia, the Middle East and the
Americas in the past 15 years. Upcoming conferences will be held in Sydney
(2012), Singapore (2013), and Geneva (2014).
