Deputy FM: Amano's Report on Iran Given out Under Western Pressures

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Iranian diplomat blamed the US and its western allies for the recent claims made by International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Chief Yukiya Amano against Iran's nuclear program.
Speaking to reporters in a press conference here on Wednesday, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh underlined that Amano's personal views are fully different from what he has written in his recent report on Iran.

"If the political pressures imposed (on Amano) by a number of expansionist countries are removed, his views will definitely be in opposition to his recent remarks," Akhoundzadeh stated.

He further pointed to former IAEA Chief Mohamed ElBaradei's recently released memoir, and said ElBaradei has acknowledged that the western states weren't interested in compromise with Tehran.

ElBaradei has said in his book that he had been close to a solution to Iran's nuclear issue on many occasions, but politics had always foiled his efforts. The former IAEA chief has specially accused the US and European officials of withholding important documents.

The remarks by the Iranian deputy foreign minister came after Amano claimed that the UN nuclear watchdog had received new unspecific information indicating that Iran may not be only developing nuclear energy for civilian purposes.

Amano, in a statement at the meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors in Vienna said that the agency has received "further information related to possible past or current undisclosed nuclear-related activities that seem to point to the existence of possible military dimensions to Iran's nuclear program."

Meantime, Iran's IAEA envoy Ali Asqar Soltaniyeh asked the UN nuclear chief to drop political allegations against Iran's nuclear program and deal with Tehran's dossier from technical and legal perspectives.

Soltaniyeh strongly rejected Amano's remarks, saying that there is no substance to the information that has been provided to the agency.
