UAE hosts third meeting of the Libya Contact Group today

Abu Dhabi, June 9, 2011 (WAM) - The United Arab Emirates (UAE) today, is hosting the third meeting of the Libya Contact Group in Abu Dhabi. The Foreign Minister of the UAE, H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, will co-chair the meeting along with Franco Frattini, the Foreign Minister of Italy.
Over 20 foreign ministers and representatives of regional and international organisations will attend the meeting, including the Gulf Cooperation Council, the Arab League, the Organisation of the Islamic Conference, the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and NATO.
The Contact Group called at its first meeting in April in Qatar on Libya's Muammar al-Qaddafi to step down. At the second meeting in Rome in May the Group stressed the need for tangible support for the Libyan Transitional National Council.
The Contact Group's third meeting in Abu Dhabi will assess the international engagement with Libya and review further action to implement United Nations Security Council resolutions 1970 and 1973. The Contact Group will also discuss the best modality to support the Transitional National Council, as well as to further coordinate international efforts to support the Libyan people.
Sheikh Abdullah said the United Arab Emirates and the other members of the Contact Group will review measures to guarantee the necessary support to the Libyan Transitional National Council. He underlined the need to follow up and act on how best to help the brotherly Libyan people to overcome this crisis. The UAE is mindful of the necessity to reach a joint vision to help the Libyan people achieve a stable and united Libya with a prosperous future.
He furthermore stressed the importance of the Transitional National Council reaching out to the entire Libyan population, in an effort to unify the country and make its representation nation-wide.
The UAE foreign minister added that humanitarian relief and assistance are top priorities, a view the UAE shares with its partners attending the Abu Dhabi meeting. He furthermore welcomed the renewed level of Arab engagement regarding the conflict in Libya, welcoming additional Arab countries to the meeting of the Contact Group in Abu Dhabi.
During the Contact Group session in Abu Dhabi, parallel meetings will be held to discuss measures needed to activate the Temporary Financial Mechanism, a crucial instrument allowing the Libyan Transitional National Council to receive and administer funds to meet essential expenditure needed to sustain public services and provide basic services The meeting will also consider the possibility to establish an international mechanism to unfreeze Libyan financial assets, formerly controlled by the Qaddafi regime, for the benefit of the Libyan people. The Contact Group will also discuss the option to implement punitive measures against individuals, companies, and other entities from Libya and abroad that continue to support the Qaddafi regime. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
