Officials learn Laos’s IMO membership
VIENTIANE,JUNE.(KPL)- Over 50 officials of the Ministry Of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Public Works and Transport have participated in a seminar on the Lao PDR’s preparation for an accession to the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), which was held on June 9.
The IMO convention on marine navigation was taught at the seminar.
“The preparation for accession to IMO membership is crucial and prioritized by the government to ensure the social-economic development in the country,” said Mr. Sommad Pholsena, Minister of Public Works and Transport.
“Annually, the government invests a large amount of money in improving roads and transport system to better its access to sea ports in Thailand and Vietnam,” said Mr. Sommad Pholsena.
The seminar will help the relevant officials realize the benefit Lao will have when it has become a member of the International Marine Organisation, according to Mr. Vanthong Somphavath, Deputy Head of Waterborne Transportation Department.
The International Marine Organisation is a specialised agency of the United Nations which is responsible for measures to improve the safety and security of international shipping and prevent marine pollution from ships and it is also involved in legal matters, including liability and compensation issues and the facilitation of international maritime traffic, according to Mr. Vu The Quang, Head of Seaborne Transportation Department, Ministry of Transportation of Vietnam.
