Former German Chancellor Eyes Iran as Potential Major Gas Supplier to Europe
TEHRAN (FNA)- Former German Chancellor Gerhard Schroeder underlined that Iran can be one of the major suppliers of gas resources to the energy-hungry European countries.
Schroeder who heads a Russian-German consortium which oversees the
construction of the North European Gas Pipeline, was quoted by the German the business daily Handelsblatt that North Africa and Iran could serve as major gas suppliers for Europe besides Russia.
Europe has reportedly been trying to lessen its dependence on Russian gas by
looking for alternative gas sources, mainly in the Middle East and North Africa.
German gas and oil imports from Iran surged to nearly 80 percent last year.
Iran has repeatedly indicated its readiness to step up gas exports to energy-hungry Europe.
