FORMER JAPANESE EXPATS ADVISED TO RECOMMEND POTENTIAL INVESTMENTS

From Adnan Jahaya
KOBE, June 11 (Bernama) -- The Crown Prince of Malaysia's northern state of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Faizuddin Putra Jamalullail, has suggested that Japanese who have served as expatriates in Malaysia recommend potential investments to investors from Japan.

While serving as expatriates in Malaysia, they would have seen the potential opportunities which could be taken advantage of, he said after a meeting with former Japanese expatriates in Malaysia at a hotel here Friday night.

Tuanku Syed Faizuddin is heading a Malaysian delegation on a week-long "Let's Go Jalan-jalan" programme organised by MASHolidays and BMC Travel Sdn Bhd from June 8, and arrived here from Kyoto Friday.

He is accompanied by his consort Tuanku Lailatul Shahreen Akashah Khalil. Also in the delegation is Bernama general manager Hasnul Hassan.

The Crown Prince said the former expatriates could recommend Malaysian products favoured by Japanese consumers.

On investment opportunities in Perlis, he said there was potential in the 'halal', logistics and tourism industries.

A former expatriate, Sadao Tanaka, 64, said he saw a good investment climate in Malaysia, including Perlis.

Tanaka is the former managing director of Shorubber (M) Sdn Bhd, a wholly owned Japanese company of 18 years in Perlis specialising in the manufacture and sale of high grade industrial gloves.

He has returned to Hyogo in Japan to take up his new job as technical advisor to Showa Glove Co., the parent company of Shorubber.

Tanaka said that during the 18 years he spent in Perlis, he had adjusted himself to life in Malaysia and now missed the food, including fried rice, and the fine culture of the people of Perlis.

He said Shorubber started out in 1992 with only 300 workers, but had grown to employ more than 2,500.

Tanaka said he had not only gotten accustomed to the people of Perlis, as many of the company's workers were from the state, but also had become close to the Perlis royal household.

Members of the Perlis royal household had visited Shorubber and he had often attended functions associated with the palace, he said.

Tanaka said that based on his experience, the close rapport between
Malaysians and expatriates facilitated business.
