Japanese Envoy: Tehran- Tokyo Trade Exchanges Unaffected by Sanctions
TEHRAN (FNA)- Japanese Ambassador to Tehran Kinichi Komano dismissed as ineffective the sanctions imposed by certain western countries against Iran, and reiterated that embargoes have left no negative impact on the trade exchanges between Tehran and Tokyo.
"Sanctions have had no major effect on the economic relations between Iran and Japan thus far," Kinichi told FNA on Saturday, stressing that despite these sanctions, the volume of exports and imports between the two countries has not experienced a remarkable decrease.
He put the volume of trade exchanges between Tehran and Tokyo at $13bln, and said that due to the imposition of sanctions, the two countries have been obliged to use Yen instead of Dollar in certain parts of their trade exchanges.
Kinichi also described the political relations between Iran and Japan as good, and said, "Fortunately, we enjoy good ties in all fields."
The two Asian states have expanded their trade cooperation in recent years and the volume of their exchanges stood at $14bln in 2009. Iranian officials believe that the two countries' trade exchanges would stand, at least, at the same level this year.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in a meeting with Kinichi in October underlined Tehran's willingness to further boost its trade ties with Tokyo much beyond the current level.
"If the volume of trade exchanges between Iran and China stands at $30 billion today, the figure must be $50 billion for the trade ties between Iran and Japan," Ahmadinejad said at the time.
He reminded the capacities existing for the expansion of the bilateral ties between the two countries, and stated, "Iran-Japan relations are stable and we believe Japan is standing on our (side of the) front."
The president further noted emergence of new powers on the international scene, and said, "Under the present circumstances, Iran and Japan can change the international conditions in their own favor and in the interest of the independent nations through consolidating their relations."
