Syrian Opposition Figure Rejects Foreign Meddling in Syria's Internal Affairs
TEHRAN (FNA)- A prominent Syrian opposition figure on Saturday called for a conference with participation of all political groups to end the ongoing internal differences in his country, and voiced his strong opposition to any foreign meddling in Syria's internal affairs.
Speaking to FNA, Secretary-General of Arab Democratic Socialist Union Party Hassan Abdul-Azim said that his party is against any interference by foreign powers in Syria's internal affairs.
He called Israel as the main enemy of the Syrian nation, and called on Damascus to use maximum force against the Zionist regime.
Asked about his proposal for soothing the turmoil in his country, Abdul-Azim proposed that a conference be held with participation of all political and opposition groups.
"In the conference, ways should be explored to implement reforms in the constitution, competency of the executive power and independence of the judiciary as well as laws on (political) parties," Abdul-Azim noted.
He further said that opposition figures want elections just as like elections in Iran and Turkey.
The activist further called on Syrian President Bashar al-Assad to grant public amnesty to all detainees.
The demand came almost two weeks after Assad issued a decree granting general amnesty to political detainees.
The amnesty will cover all crimes committed before May 31, including those of banned political opposition movements such as Muslim Brotherhood. It will also commute the sentences for some common crimes committed before May 31 to half.
The amnesty is the second within two months. Al-Assad issued an amnesty last month to minor crimes.
After the outbreak of protests in Dara'a and several other cities across Syria in mid-March, the government said about 500 security forces have died and blamed the killings and violence in Dara'a on an armed terrorist group, which has confessed to receiving weapons and money to kill people and security forces to cause chaos in the Muslim country.
Meantime, Hundreds of Syrian and foreign nationals gathered near the American Embassy in Damascus in May calling upon the US to abstain from meddling in Syria's internal affairs.
The demonstrators carried banners condemning the policy of double standards adopted by the US towards Syria as it turns a blind eye to the Israeli crimes against the Palestinian people.
