Radiation background normal in Russia's Far East

KHABAROVSK, June 12 (Itar-Tass) -- Russia's Far Eastern regions report
no increases in radiation background levels on Sunday, weeks after the
accident at Japan's Fukushima-1 nuclear plant.
The Far Eastern emergencies centre reported that no deviation from the
natural radiation background levels have been registered in either of the
regions and territories of the Far East.
"According to radiation monitoring data, the levels of gamma radiation
range within the band from ten to 17 microroentgen per hour, which is
below the permissible level of 30 microroentgen," a spokesman for the
centre said.
The majority of Far Eastern regions report radiation background levels
twice as low as the permissible level.
Radiation background in the Khabarovsk territory on Sunday morning was
14 microroentgen per hour.
According to the territorial administration of the federal consumer
rights protection authority (Rospotrebnadzor), samples of atmospheric
fallouts taken in Khabarovsk and Komsomolsk-on-Amur show the activity of
beta particles, i.e. caesium-137 and strontium-90, within average yearly
values. Air, water and food samples feature no increase in the
radionuclide content.
No cases of radioactive contamination have been reported this week
after checks of transport vehicles, passengers, crews and cargoes at sea
ports and airports in the entire Far East.
"There is no threat to the population in Russia's Far East after
accidents at Japanese nuclear plants," the spokesman stressed.
