Official: Tehran Conference Exploring Practical Ways of Disarmament
TEHRAN (FNA)- The current international conference on nuclear disarmament in Tehran is seeking to find practical solutions to global nuclear disarmament, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Legal and International Affairs Mohammad Mehdi Akhoundzadeh said.
Addressing the opening session of the conference here in Tehran on Sunday, Akhoundzadeh stated, "The second global disarmament conference that is underway in Tehran with the participation of officials, elites and international actors in the field of disarmament is after practical ways for global disarmament."
He further noted international support for Iran's initiative, and added that Tehran's invitation to the world states and individuals has received a warm welcome from officials, elites and international institutions.
The official expressed the hope that the strong international support and wide participation in the conference would lead to the find of practical solutions to global disarmament.
The second conference dubbed 'A Review of Existing Challenges in Nuclear Disarmament and Dismantlement of other WMDs' started work at the Foreign Ministry's Political and International Studies Office here in Tehran today.
The two-day conference has brought together officials and representatives of over 40 countries from across the world as well as ambassadors and representatives from international bodies such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The event comprises three specialized panels which will discuss the doctrines of nuclear powers, take practical measures to have a world free from weapons of mass destruction and review regional as well as international disarmament commitments.
Last Wednesday Akhoundzadeh said that drafting an international convention on nuclear disarmament would stand atop Iran's agenda at the conference.
"Preparing a draft convention on confrontation against nuclear weapons at global levels is among our efforts in the international conference on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation," Akhoundzadeh stated at the time.
