Turkish opposition party MHP says results point to success but not satisfying
ANKARA (A.A) - 12.06.2011 - Turkey's opposition Nationalist Movement Party, or MHP, says results of parliamentary elections point to a success "considering all the plots to keep the party below election threshold."
MHP won 13.2 percent of votes, according to more than 90 percent of votes counted, which showed that ruling Justice & Development (AK) Party secured a strong victory with 50 percent. Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) gained 26 percent.
In 2007 parliamentary elections, MHP won 14.2 percent of votes.
MHP's Deputy Chairman Faruk Bal, who appeared at a press conference shortly after the latest results, said that there was a campaign against MHP before elections, however, this campaign failed to keep the party below 10 percent election threshold.
Bal, however, said MHP was not satisfied with the poll.
Bal said his party spoiled plans for a parliament without MHP, adding that "constitutional amendments would be the first thing to debate after elections and MHP would not shift stance on the issue."
