Official: Iran, Armenia to Widen Transportation Cooperation
TEHRAN (FNA)- Armenia's transportation officials are seeking to use Iran's experience in freeway construction, a senior Iranian official announced on Sunday.
"During the session with Armenian transportation authorities, the two sides agreed to hold meetings of expert road and railway transportation committees to enable the two countries to use transportation links in their public interest and we hope that this objective will be well attained in future," Iranian Deputy Minister of Road and Transportation Shahryar Afandizadeh told FNA.
Meantime, the official reminded that Iran and Armenia have already established proper ties in the transportation sector.
He added that the two countries' committees are slated to hold meeting in the near future in a bid to enable Armenia use Iran's experience in constructing freeways through private sector partnership.
Afandizadeh also stressed that Iranian contractors are ready to take part in the road construction projects in Armenia.
Earlier this week, Armenian Ambassador to Iran Grigor Arakelyan said Iranian and Armenian officials are working hard to connect the two countries' transportation systems.
Arakelyan said Iran and Armenia signed an agreement during a recent meeting of the two countries' joint economic cooperation commission in Tehran to specify a timetable for conducting joint activities in various economic spheres.
At the end of the meeting both sides agreed that their transportation ministries sign a memorandum of understanding in the next three months in order to make preparations for constructing the railways, he explained.
Thus, Iran will undertake to construct a 60-kilometer railway from Jolfa, a town located to the north of Tabriz, in East Azarbaijan to its borders with Armenia and Armenia, in turn, will construct a 400-kilometer railway from its border, he stated.
Iran and Armenia have taken major strides to promote their bilateral relations in the past few years. The bilateral trade volume between the two states stands at nearly $270 million, a figure that is expected to rapidly climb in a near future, according to officials.
