Commander: All Unknown Flights Kept Outside Iranian Airspace

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's powerful and integrated air defense system never allows any unknown civil or military flight to enter Iranian airspace, Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base stressed after a recent media hype by the West over Iran's delayed permission to German chancellor's plane to use the country's airspace.
The western media outlets continued their hues and cries for several days in late May over Iran's delayed permission to the plane carrying the German Chancellor, Angela Merkel, and government officials to pass through the Iranian airspace to reach India.

Iranian officials said at the time that the pilot of the plane carrying the German chancellor had announced a wrong flight code and, thus, certain problems arose while Merkel was on board, waiting for the permission to fly through the Iranian airspace.

Merkel's plane had to circle over Turkey for about two hours before it was allowed to enter Iranian airspace.

Alluding to the event, Commander of Khatam ol-Anbia Air Defense Base Brigadier General Farzad Esmayeeli said his unit has standard codes of operation, which includes finding, tracing and identifying all objects flying over the Iranian airspace in a bid to determine if they are friendly or enemy flights.

"Interception is the next phase, if it is a friendly plane it will receive the permission for a safe passage and if it is an enemy or unknown plane, it will be denied entrance to the Iranian airspace," the commander noted, adding that there is no exception for any civil or military aircraft.

He added that any plane that intends to enter Iranian airspace should first conduct the necessary coordination with Iran's integrated air defense network controlled by Khatam ol-Anbia headquarters.
