INDIA LAUNCHES OWN CRUISE LINER TO LINK SOUTHEAST ASIA
By Vijian Paramasivam
CHENNAI, June 13 (Bernama) -- India launched its maiden luxury cruise liner that will sail to exotic Southeast Asian islands, aiming to capture the growing Indian tourists opting for sea holidays.
The Amet Majesty would sail from Chennai to destinations such as
Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Langkawi, Maldives, Phuket, Sri Lanka and Singapore.
"These are destinations catering for Indian people who prefer places closer to the Indian Ocean.
"There is a strong demand for cruise holidays in India. Nearly 125,000 Indians went on cruise holidays in 2010," Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of AMET Shipping India Pvt Ltd P. Bharathi told Bernama here Monday.
India's cruise market is expanding at about 25 to 30 per cent, annually, and global growth is at 12 to 15 per cent, with the worldwide cruise market estimated at US$29 billion (RM87 billion).
"It's an ideal time to enter the market. Disposable income is growing and more Indians are exploring adventurous holidays. We are offering a floating hotel, all in one," he added.
The cruise liner is slated to sail to Malaysia's northern island resort of Langkawi end-July.
The 35-year-old vessel, owned by Chennai-based AMET Shipping India
Pvt, can easily handle 1,000 passengers, including tourists and crew,
on international voyages.
