20,000 TO VISIT TURTLE INFORMATION CENTRE THIS YEAR
KUALA TERENGGANU (Terengganu, Malaysia), June 13 (Bernama) -- About 20,000 visitors are expected to visit the turtle information centre in Rantau Abang this year, east coast state of Terengganu Fisheries Department director Zakaria Ismail said Monday.
He said the highest number was expected during the school holidays and festive seasons, who were mostly local visitors as well as foreign tourists.
He told Bernama Monday that the department had located about 30 live sea tuntung (a type of turtle) at the information centre along with other replicas for public display.
Zakaria said that the department's main focus was to educate and create awareness on turtles among school children, students and non-governmental organisations.
He said the move was important because the endangered turtle population could become extinct in the future.
He added that other activities included bringing visitors to the turtle sanctuary in Ma'Daerah in Kerteh to watch turtles lay eggs, as well as conducting gotong-royong to clean the beach and to release hatchlings into the sea.
