OIC Chief expresses concern over drought in the Horn of Africa

Jeddah, September 10, SPA -- The Secretary General of the
Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin
Ihsanoglu follows with deep concern the threats looming over millions
of people due the drought affecting a large swath of land in central
and southern Somalia and the Horn of Africa.

The Secretary General has called for immediate relief assistance to
be extended to the millions of people who might suffer death by
starvation in these regions due to drought and continued wars that
led the escalation of the crisis.

Prof. Ihsanoglu also called on Muslim countries in particular,
together with Islamic charity and relief organizations, and
businessmen, in Ramadan, to provide urgent and immediate food and
medical assistance and contributions, both in cash and kind, to come
to grips with the effects of the drought in these regions, within the
spirit of brotherhood, integration and solidarity among all nations,
according to a press release of OIC issued here yesterday.
