Pink Caravan reveals results of its 10-day campaign across the UAE
Abu Dhabi, June 14, 2011 (WAM) - Results from the Pink Caravan campaign have revealed that 2,446 people benefited from awareness lectures while 1,600 others were screened during the 10-day journey across the UAE to raise breast cancer awareness.
According to Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, head of the Pink Caravan's Medical and Awareness Committee, 96 men were among the 2,446 people attended lectures, while 63 men and 1537 women were screened for breast cancer.
Al Madhi highlighted the fruitful outcomes of the Pink Caravan campaign, an initiative launched by His Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, Member of the Supreme Council and Ruler of Sharjah, and his wife, Sheikha Jawaher bint Mohammed Al Qasimi.
She said that the campaign, which ran from 2 to 11 April, witnessed a great response thanks to the immense official and public support for its noble message and goals across the emirates. "The campaign, a unique initiative, also received great media attention that went beyond the country's regional geographic borders," Dr. Sawsan noted.
Speaking on the occasion, Ameera Bin Karam, President and Founding Member of Friends of Cancer Patients (FOCP), said: "The UAE is exerting enormous efforts to raise health awareness among Emirati citizens and expatriates, and it spares no effort in trying to make the country free from diseases that pose a threat to the health of society." "The UAE generally participates, hosts and supports various international, regional and local initiatives that are in line with its strategic goals and which highlight its leading role in honouring human values and upgrading its society's health and intellect," she added.
Bin Karam said the initiative by Sharjah's Ruler and his wife to launch the Pink Caravan is the practical translation of the UAE's humanitarian approach, and serves as the reason for the campaign's immense and widespread impact.
"The outcome of the 10-day journey exceeded our expectations by almost double the anticipated figures. These results will encourage us to press ahead with our preparations for upcoming campaigns, which will run until February 2014," she clarified.
The Pink Caravan kicked off from Sharjah and wrapped up its 10-day journey in Abu Dhabi after marking more than 330 kilometres on horseback. More than 100 riders - both men and women - took part in the nationwide breast cancer awareness campaign.
The Pink Caravan stopped at different sites throughout its journey across the emirates, offering free early detection screenings for both Emiratis and expatriates of various nationalities living in the UAE at mobile medical clinics, schools and shopping malls. Lectures and presentations were also delivered.
According to the campaign's statistics, a total of 866 Emiratis and 734 expatriates were screened. Suspected cases were referred for further examinations and medical advice, with 567 people being referred for mammograms, and 100 people sent for ultrasound screenings.
The Pink Caravan campaign received great support and cooperation from many government and private bodies, including the Ministry of Health, Dubai Health Authority and Abu Dhabi Health Authority. In addition, great support and cooperation was shown by Tawam Hospital in Al Ain, Canadian Specialised Hospital in Dubai, Ras Al Khaimah Private Hospital, the Medicare Medical Centre, the UAE Genetic Diseases Association and Sharjah University.
