UAE participates in HIV/AIDS meeting in New York
New York, NY, June 14, 2011 (WAM) - Dr. Hanif Hassan Ali, UAE Minister of Health, emphasised the importance of supporting international efforts to eliminate HIV/AIDS in order to achieve the goals and objectives of the United Nationals HIV/AIDS National Program, provide treatment for the community members and protect the rights of people living with the disease.
This was stated by Dr Hanif the UAE Minister of Health who headed the UAE delegation in the high level meeting that was held in New York to discuss the topic of HIV/AIDs in New York in the United States of America.
The UAE Minister of Health said: "On behalf of the UAE government and nation, please allow me to express my deepest appreciation for the efforts of the General Secretariat of the United Nations to address the HIV/AIDS epidemic through international efforts and initiatives to stand united and face this disease which threatens global health security".
"HIV/AIDS is one of the major health challenges worldwide since its appearance 30 years ago. The disease was a major cause for the deterioration of health, social and human conditions in several countries and an economic obstacles for other countries", he elaborated.
Dr Hanif emphasised that the statistics of the United Nations Program for HIV/AIDS reveal that the number of patients living with HIV/AIDS reached 33.3 million people while the total number of patients who died of this disease till the end of the year 2010 reached 30 million. About 7100 new cases are reported every day, mostly of children and mothers.
He also assured that although HIV/AIDS disease is not a national health problem in the United Arab Emirates yet we all seek to increase our international efforts to face this disease. The United Arab Emirates adopted health strategies to face the health challenges and enhance active international partnerships.
"The Ministry of Health completely abides by the Dubai agreement which calls for adopting a policy for achieving protection, prevention, care and support for HIV/AIDS patients in the Middle East and North Africa Region and implementing a national strategy plan to control the disease. The UAE also provided all the necessary capabilities to apply the national program through utilising the best resources in consultation and coordination with the competent authorities. We also depended on the regional and international references especially the World Health Organisation and United Nations Program for HIV/AIDS, which led to control the disease and maintain low rates compared to other countries", he added.
The United Arab Emirates national program encouraged local and international blood donators to use modern technologies therefore our statistics did not record any HIV/AIDS cases due to blood transfusion.
The UAE approved the program of examining groups who are most vulnerable to the disease, pointing out that the testing program of newlywed couples ensures early screenings to raise the awareness of prevention and protection of the younger generations. The UAE also adopted the active epidemiological system based on population surveys to determine the effectiveness of the awareness programs, behavioural changes towards the disease and its causes in addition to the development of health legislations and ongoing review of protocols for drug treatment.
"The UNGASS report assures the participation of the UAE Ministry of Health and UN AIDS in their report that was issued in 2010 to provide treatment and care for patients living with HIV/AIDS; a program treatment entirely available in all the health authorities in the UAE", Dr Hanif concluded.
The report lauded the efforts of the Ministry of Health and all health authorities as well as international organisations especially the UN AIDS program, WHO and UNICEF. The report also referred to the approval of the cabinet of the decision No. (29) Of 2010 concerning HIV/AIDS patients in a strong indication of the UAE's federal government in maintaining the dignity and rights of those patients and protecting from any discrimination either from their studies or employment.
The meeting was attended by Ahmed Al Jarman, UAE Ambassador to the United Nations Headquarters in New York, Dr. Mahmood Fikri, Assistant Undersecretary for Health Policies at the Ministry of Health, and Nasser Khelifa Al Budoor, Assistant Undersecretary for External Relations and International Organisations. - Emirates News Agency, WAM
