LEGATO FIRST MEETING KICKS OFF TODAY IN PENANG
GEORGE TOWN, June 14 (Bernama) -- The first meeting and workshop for "Land-use Intensity and Ecological Engineering - Assessment Tools for Risks and Opportunities in Irrigated Rice Based Production Systems" (Legato) was launched here Tuesday with the participation of various international research institutions.
The three-day event is jointly organised by the Malaysian Agricultural Research and Development Institute (Mardi) in collaboration with Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Researh (UFZ), International Rice Researh Institute (IRRI) and Centre for Agricultural Bioscience International, Southeast and East
Asia (CABI).
Legato 2011 was officially launched by Mardi director-general Dr
Abdul Shukor Abdul Rahman. The Legato logo was also launched during the event.
The chairman of the International Organising Committee and Project
Co-ordinator Prof Dr Josef Settele said Legato was an international consortium of 22 research institution from seven countries namely Germany, Malaysia, Vietnam, The Philippines, United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Spain.
He said it was established to advance long-term sustainable development of irrigated rice fields against risks arising from multiple aspects of global change.
The research project also plans to quantify the dependence of ecosystem functions and services they generate in three countries in Southeast Asia namely Muda Irrigation Scheme (Malaysia), Mekong Delta in the South and the Red River Valley along a transect from Sapa to Hanoi (Vietnam) and along a transect from Northern to Central Luzon (The Philippines).
