TRANSPARENCY KEY FACTOR TO TRANSFORM MALAYSIA INTO HIGH-INCOME ECONOMY, SAYS ECONOMIST
By Tengku Noor Shamsiah Tengku Abdullah
SINGAPORE, June 14 (Bernama) -- Malaysia must focus on transparency that will foster creativity and productivity growth in efforts to transform the country into a high-income developed nation, says a renowned economist Prof Florencio Lopez de Silanes.
"What we know is that countries that grow faster and do better in the long run have a set of institutions that are transparent and foster creativity and productivity growth," Lopez de Silanes, a professor of Finance at the EDHEC Business School in the Accounting, Law and Finance Department in France told Bernama in an interview here.
Based in Nice, Lopez de Silanes has been one of the top three most cited researchers in the world in economics and business in the last 10 years, according to the Essential Science Indicators.
Before joining the EDHEC, he taught at the Amsterdam Business School, Harvard, Yale and the Ecole Normale Suprieure in Paris.
Lopez de Silanes also said Malaysia must have strong institutions of education as human capital was very important to propel the nation into a high-income economy.
Acknowledging that Malaysia was doing a good job in developing quality human capital, he said human capital was a crucial "ingredient" for a nation like Malaysia moving forward to become a developed nation in 2020.
