Tajik Analyst Stresses Importance of Iran's Membership in SCO

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran's permanent membership in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will boost the organization's security potentials and capabilities, a prominent Tajik analyst stated.
Speaking to FNA on Tuesday, Deputy Head of Tajikistan's Center for Strategic Research Seifollah Safarov pointed to the recent international and regional developments, and underlined the positive outcomes of Iran's membership in the regional bloc.

"Changing Iran's membership status in the Shanghai Organization will provide further grounds for cooperation among the organization's members in confronting security threats that have targeted the region," he noted.

He pointed to the close cooperation between Iran and the SCO member states, and added that such cooperation will lead to further convergence among members.

The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) is an intergovernmental organization which was founded in 2001 in Shanghai, China, by the Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Russian, Tajik, Uzbek and Chinese heads of state.

Iran currently holds an observer status in the group and applied for full membership in a request filed on March 24, 2008.

SCO member governments include China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, as well as four formally designated observer countries, namely Iran, India, Mongolia and Pakistan.
