SCOMI'S MONORAIL PROJECT IN MUMBAI GOES FOR TESTING IN AUGUST
By Manik Mehta
NEW DELHI, June 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia-based Scomi Engineering Bhd will be closely monitoring the testing of Mumbai’s monorail project to begin in August.
Rahul Asthana, the commissioner of the Mumbai Metropolitan Regional
Development Authority (MMRDA), said the monorail’s testing will be first conducted on the nearly 5km-long Wadala-Mysore Colony route in Mumbai.
Asthana has held a meeting with the consortium partners -- Scomi and the Indian engineering group Larsen & Toubro -- who are involved in the construction of the first phase of the monorail from Chembur to Jacob Circle via Wadala.
Upon completion, the companies will operate the monorail on the 20km stretch for a three-year period.
The monorail, the “train of the future”, as Mumbai residents hope will turn out to be and provide them relief from the overcrowded railway system on which Mumbai’s working class relies to be ferried from one end of the city to the other.
It is hailed by commuters backing the project as a “model” for future public transportation system.
The monorail system will provide some relief to commuters and ease the pressure from Mumbai’s creaking public transportation system.
Supporters say the single-track monorail trains could provide quick and a low-cost fix to the mobility bottlenecks.
Scomi Engineering Bhd has been eyeing the Indian market since the economic liberalisation began in the country.
Scomi is understandably interested in extending the contract beyond the initial three-year period.
It is learnt that Scomi officials have met with senior MMRDA officials, and have urged the agency to appoint the next operator in advance before the expire of the three-year contract.
Scomi, which has also been exploring avenues of cooperation within and outside India, has already signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with India-based Engineering Projects (India) Ltd, a prime consulting and contracting company in India, for monorail projects in India and abroad.
The MoU was signed by Scomi Group’s CEO Shah Hakim Zain and S.P.S. Bakshi, the chairman and managing director of Engineering Projects (India) Ltd, in the presence of Vilasrao Deshmukh, the Indian minister for heavy industries andublic enterprises.
Under the terms of the agreement, Scomi will work with EPI as a “preferred” consortium partner to carry out projects involving construction of monorails and Mass Rapid Transport Systems, both in India and abroad.
Both sides hope to benefit from the synergies that will be forthcoming from this cooperation. The EPI is known to have carried out over 480 multi-disciplinary projects in India worth some US$1,175.46 million, and 30 projects valued at over US$782 million in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Maldives, Bhutan and Thailand.
