Number of wildfires growing in Russia's Far East.
KHABAROVSK, June 15 (Itar-Tass) -- First dry days after a week of
rains in Russia's Far East are seeing the growth in the number of forest
fires. Thus, by Wednesday morning, eleven wildfires on an overall area of
575 hectares were reported in the republic of Yakutia and the Amur region,
a spokesman for the forestry department of the Far Eastern federal
district told Itar-Tass, adding that six new fires were registered during
the past day.
"A total of 308 hectares of forests are on fire in Yakutia, and 267
hectares - in the Amur region," the spokesman said. Fire fighting
operations involved 120 men and eight units of hardware. Three fires were
put out.
A total of 1,220 wildfires have been registered in the Far East since
the beginning of this year's fire season. The overall fire area was
462,300 hectares, including 338,400 hectares of forests.
