MALAYSIA'S GIFTS, PREMIUM & STATIONERY EXPORTS TO SEE DOUBLE-DIGIT GROWTH
KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's exports of gifts, premium and stationery products are expected to see double-digit growth this year on the back of growing demand.
In the first quarter, they grew 10 per cent to RM1.1 billion compared with the previous corresponding quarter, International Trade and Industry Minister Mustapa Mohamed said Wednesday. (US$1=RM3.04)
"Singapore remains Malaysia's largest export destination for these items, followed by Japan and the US," he told reporters after opening the three-day Kuala Lumpur International Gifts, Premium and Stationery Exhibition (KLIGP) 2011 here.
Last year, the country exported a total of RM4.3 billion worth of gifts, premium and stationery products, an increase of 7.6 per cent from 2009.
Earlier in his speech, Mustapa said the gifts, premium and stationery industry was becoming increasingly competitive in the country and abroad, and the key success in the business was to differentiate from others through unique design and creativity.
"So, making innovation and creativity a key component of business strategy makes eminent sense," he said.
Mustapa also stressed the importance of branding to develop strong and sustainable brand identities so that Malaysian products stand out in the marketplace.
"Those who have the resources should start investing in brand building.
"Yes, this can be an expensive process and it can also take a long time but like everything else, every product must have an identity, and your identity is something you cannot do without," he said.
Meanwhile, Malaysian Gifts and Premium Entrepreneur Association (MGPA) President Alan Ong said the value of deals during KLIGP 2011 was expected to surpass last year's RM500 million by up to 30 per cent.
This was based on the higher number of booths established as well as additional four countries joining the exhibition, he said.
This year's exhibition booths totalled 425, compared with 368 in 2010 while the number of participating countries including new ones like South Korea, Vietnam and Cambodia is 11.
KLIGP 2011, being held at the Putra World Trade Centre, was organised by the MGPA with the theme "Innovation and Creativity Lead to Success".
