88,000 PEOPLE EVACUATED IN FLOOD-HIT CENTRAL, SOUTH CHINA
The torrential rains which hit several southern regions since Monday, has forced about 88,000 people in the Zhejiang, Jiangxi, Hubei, Hunan, Sichuan and Guizhou provinces to evacuate their homes.
According to the civil affairs ministry, the rains and floods in Central and South China left seven people dead and seven more missing over the past three days.
In a statement Wednesday, the ministry said the heavy rains pounded the Hubei, Hunan, Jiangxi, Guizhou and Anhui provinces on Monday evening, followed by the Zhejiang province, the following morning.
The rain is predicted to last until Friday in some regions, according to local meteorological authorities.
The ministry has cooperated with the National Disaster Reduction Commission to launch emergency flood relief plans and send four work teams to assist with disaster relief works.
The two authorities have allocated 35 million Yuan (US$5.4 million) in relief funds for the Guizhou province and sent 5,000 tents and 40,000 quilts to flood victims in the Guizhou and Hunan provinces.
