UNDERWORLD DON'S HIT-MEN HELD FOR JOURNALIST'S MURDER
Mumbai police believe they have cracked, what is believed to be an underworld-sanctioned contract killing of senior investigative journalist Jyotirmoy Dey.
This follows the arrest of three alleged hired killers belonging to dreaded underworld don Chhotta Shakeel's gang Wednesday.
Dey, 56, a senior investigative editor with the MiD-Day newspaper was shot five times by four motorcycle-riding assailants in northwest Mumbai last Saturday afternoon.
The victim, who had been covering underworld crime news for almost two decades, died on the spot in Powai, a suburban area of India’s financial capital.
The suspects were believed to be members of a gang involved in smuggling sandalwood, diesel and oil, according to Indian television channels.
According to latest reports emerging from Mumbai, Dey was about to expose a sandalwood smuggling ring linked to Shakeel's gang when he was warned by the suspects not to publish the article.
Shakeel is a leading Indian crime don and a close aide of India’s most wanted terrorist, Dawood Ibrahim. Several years ago, Dawood had sought shelter in Pakistan after fleeing India.
Following the recent elimination of Al-Qaeda chief Osama bin Laden by United States forces in Pakistan, Dawood is believed to have escaped from his safe haven to West Asia.
Shakeel’s gang had once operated from its Southeast Asian base in Bangkok where it was linked to drug trafficking, arms smuggling and kidnapping of high-profile Indian businessmen.
After a shootout with a rival gang in the streets of Bangkok in 2000, it was learnt that the injured don was flown to Kuala Lumpur in a private aircraft for medical treatment.
