SHELL MALAYSIA CONTRIBUTES BURSARIES, SCHOLARSHIP WORTH US$3.6 MILLION
KUCHING (Bernama) - Shell Malaysia is awarding 400 bursaries and 100 scholarships, worth RM11 million (US$3.610 million) this year to outstanding young Malaysian talents as part of the Economic Transformation Programme in education and human capital development, said its Human Resource Director Leslie Hayward.
He said the Shell Educational Excellence Awards were in recognition of their excellent academic achievements and to enable them to pursue pre-university or first-degree courses at approved institutions locally or overseas.
“Shell recognises that as the country advances towards becoming a high income economy, it will need a larger pool of professionals who are highly qualified and able to make the country more competitive,” he said at the awards ceremony for Sarawak-based students, which was officiated by Minister in the Chief Minister’s Office Fatimah Abdullah, here Thursday.
He said the programme had enabled more than 2,000 young Malaysians realise their full academic potential over the past 40 years.
This year’s Shell Educational Excellence Awards included a special
scholarship category for four students with physical disabilities, which was launched last year initially for Sarawak students in conjunction with Shell’s 100 years of Upstream operations in Miri.
Under its Campus Ambassador Programme, he said, Shell also provided input to the curricula of the Engineering and Geoscience faculties of a few selected universities in Malaysia besides sponsoring a chair and setting up a carbonate research laboratory at University Technology Petronas.
