LID PROVIDES EXCEPTIONAL PLATFORM TO STIMULATE MUTUAL INVESTMENTS AND TRADE

By Mohd Iswandi Kasan Anuar
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - The Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) provides an exceptional platform to stimulate mutual investment and trade collaborations among participating countries, says Honorary Consul of Uganda in Malaysia Noraihan Mohammad Adnan.

She says the private sector has been more conscious about investing in Africa and vice-versa since the biennial dialogue was incepted in 1995.

"Yes. Africa is the place for investment now," she told Bernama in an interview ahead of the ninth edition of the LID 2011 in Putrajaya.

Noraihan said the timing of the dialogue was right for participating countries to learn from each other's experience solving problems on food security and escalating oil prices.

She said sharing technological advances was another avenue where one country could enrich her neighbour through the smart partnership concept.

"From smart partnerships and dialogues a lot of technologies are going to be transferred across continents and countries.

"However, it is too early to start counting but in a decade from now, the results of many projects that are being initiated now between Malaysia and Uganda will be there for everybody to see," she added.

Prime Minister Najib Razak will open the three-day dialogue at the Putrajaya International Convention Centre (PICC) on Sunday.

Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin will open the Malaysia-Africa business forum themed "Exploring New Dimensions" on Saturday.

LID Founder and former Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad is among the speakers at the dialogue hosted by Malaysia for the first time outside Langkawi.

Eleven countries are expected to attend the dialogue along with some 500 local and international participants, senior officials from public and private sectors, academicians and non-governmental organisations from the African continent and the caribbean.

The dialogue is expected to again spearhead Malaysia's quest in joining hands with fellow developing nations in promoting development premised on the concept of "prosper thy neighbour" where development is achieved via "win-win" smart partnerships.

Uganda, located in East Africa, with a population of about 32 million, has substantial natural resources and is blessed with fertile soil, sizeable mineral deposits of copper and cobalt.
