ABU BAKAR BA'ASYIR GETS 15 YEARS JAIL
By Ahmad Fuad Yahya
JAKARTA (Bernama) - Indonesian cleric Abu Bakar Ba'asyir was Thursday sentenced to 15 years jail by the South Jakarta District Court after he was found guilty of involvement in terrorist training in Aceh.
The Jamaah Anshorut Tauhid (JAT) movement leader was proven to have planned and launched the training with Dulmatin alias Joko Pitono, who was shot dead by police last year.
He was also found to have collected funds for the training and influenced the participants to carry out terrorist acts.
The ruling was read by chief judge Herry Swantoro at 1.40pm, after four other judges read out their verdicts, which took almost five hours since 9am.
The sentence was lighter than demands by the prosecutor for a life sentence on Ba'asyir.
When given the opportunity to give his views on the verdict, the cleric defiantly protested against the decision.
"I oppose this verdict because it is unfair and against Islamic laws. It is forbidden for me to accept this ruling," he said.
His defence team has informed the court that they will submit an appeal against the sentence.
He was apprehended by police in Ciamis, West Java, on Aug 9 last
year and accused of being involved in setting up a jihadi training camp in the mountainous region of Jalin Jantho in Aceh, in addition to planning, launching and funding terrorist activities.
Several years ago, Ba'asyir had also been accused of being part of bomb attacks in Bali and the JW Marriott, Jakarta, but there was insufficient evidence to prove his involvement in both incidents.
Police Thursday stepped up security around the court building on Jalan Ampera Raya, South Jakarta, by deploying over 3,000 personnel including soldiers to control the cleric's supporters.
Almost all shops in the vicinity of the court were closed to avoid
any untoward incidents.
