CENTRALISED BODY NEEDED TO ATTRACT FDIs INTO GREEN LOGISTICS INDUSTRY

By P. Santhia
KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Malaysia needs to establish a centralised body to attract more foreign investments from Europe into the green logistics industry.

Currently, the logistics responsibility was fragmented as investors had to deal with various government ministries and state government agencies in the country, said European Union Malaysia Chamber of Commerce and Industry Chairman David Jones.

"For green logistics, investors currently deal with a range of ministries and state authorities. A centralised body will offer easier access to investors," he told Bernama after chairing a forum titled, "Green Logistics: An Emerging Solution" here Thursday.

Jones said Malaysia had the right direction to develop green logistics technology but implementation initiatives were severaly lacking.

Europe is a global leader in green technology innovation, application and policy incentive schemes and green logistics is an important strategy for global companies in creating sustainable supply chains and customer value.

He said the liberalisation of the various logistics services under Asean are forecast to be completed by 2013 and this required the country to strengthen its logistics industry, the capabilities of the logistics players and the multi-modal transport infrastructure to attract FDIs into Malaysia.

"As EU companies are world leaders in green technology, they see green technology as one of the important benchmark to invest in a country besides cost, incentives and so on.

"If Malaysia can adopt and strengthen its green logistics, it will create a competitive advantage in the region and automatically the country will be the first choice for investors, especially Europeans," Jones said.

Hence, Malaysia, due to its excellent location, transportation
infrastructure and availability of land would be the preferred location for an Asia Regional Distribution Centre allowing for value added logistics, he added.
