LOGISTICS COMPANIES ENCOURAGED TO COMPLY WITH HALAL LOGISTICS STANDARD

KUALA LUMPUR (Bernama) - Malaysian companies engaged in the logistics business are encouraged to comply with the Halal Logistics Standard in their business to tap into the growing demand for halal-related services, namely the halal logistics industry.

International Trade and Industry Deputy Minister Jacob Dungau Sagan said to date some 31,000 companies are involved in the logistics sector and they are mainly small and medium enterprises (SMEs), of which, only a few companies have adopted the Halal Logistics Standard.

"The halal logistics sector is set to become one of the fastest growth areas in the region due to growing awareness and the need for halal products and services.

"The Malaysian logistics industry is expected to grow by 15 per cent to RM 121 billion this year as compared to RM108.5 billion (US$35.608 billion) last year. (US$1=RM3.04)

"It is timely for the Malaysian logistics service operators strive to become reputable and trusted partners of the halal industry," he said in his closing address at the Malaysia Standard on 2400 Series Halal Logistics Standard Perspective seminar here Thursday.

Jacob said the most sought-after outsourcing activities available are transportation, freight forwarding and warehousing.

He said value-added services such as packaging and labelling, quality assurance and control and information management are among logistics functions outsourced in Malaysia.

"Therefore, there are vast business opportunities in these areas for SMEs to engage in," he said.

Moving forward, Jacob said the government will continue to develop Halal standards to cover other components throughout the halal supply chain.

He said other than the Malaysian Halal Standards, the government has also developed standards for halal-related industries.

"Besides the Food Standards and Halal Logistics Standard, halal standard for cosmetics and personal care as well as halal pharmaceutical guidelines have also been developed," he added.
