Number of unmarried Seoulites in their 30s doubled in last decade
A growing number of Seoul residents are getting married later in life or avoiding it altogether, as the population of singles in their 30s nearly doubled last year from a decade before, a report said Friday.
Out of 8.2 million people aged 15 or over in the nation's capital, the number of unmarried people in their 30s jumped to 656,814 at the end of last year, up 96.5 percent from 2000, the report by the Seoul Metropolitan Government said.
Singles in their 30s accounted for 7.9 percent of the total population in Seoul, up from 4.2 percent a decade ago.
The number of unmarried men last year reached 1.59 million, or 53.9 percent, surpassing that of women at 1.36 million, or 46.1 percent.
As of the end of last year, more singles in their early 30s had never been married (431,847), compared to those who had wed at least once (425,917).
As of December, 335,849 Seoulites were divorced, nearly twice the total of 175,148 a decade ago.
