SPECIAL LICENCE RULE FOR ZOO OPERATORS FROM MARCH NEXT YEAR
From March 1 next year, all 43 zoos, commercial breeders, research centres, circus owners or organisers of wildlife exhibitions are required to have special licence to keep organs, bodyparts and protected live animals.
Natural Resources and Environment Minister Douglas Uggah Embas said all regulations under the Wildlife Protection Department and National Parks Act are being finalised and will be gazetted before end Sept.
"We are giving them six months to apply for the special licence. Wildlife will get more protection via stringent enforcement and heavier penalties," he told a press conference here Thursday.
He said zoo operators and relevant parties need to licence each animal under their care and not their overall operation.
The ministry held consultations on the special licence with relevant parties involved in the regulation of zoo, exhibition, circus, commercial breeding and disposal.
"To date, the Wildlife Protection Department has conducted audits on 17 zoological parks to ensure that operators comply with the Zoo Operation Regulation which will come into force soon."
Uggah said there were 116 cases of wildlife crimes recorded since the Wildlife Protection Act 2010 came into force on Dec 28 last year.
Of the total, ten have been brought to court while 106 are still under investigation.
