MALAYSIA SET TO SHOWCASE ACHIEVEMENTS IN INNOVATION AT LID2011

By Choong En Han

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Malaysia is set to showcase its
achievements in innovation, which helped propel the economy to greater heights, to African countries through an exhibition at the Langkawi International Dialogue (LID) 2011 in Putrajaya this weekend.

Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Dr Maximus Ongkili said Malaysia was also open to further collaboration with African countries in life sciences such as biotechnology, industrial technology, green energy, as well as, the information and communications sector.

"In terms of innovation, we have a lot of aspects of Malaysia that we can share with the delegates," he told Bernama in an interview ahead of LID 2011 beginning June 19 which will be preceeded by a business forum and exhibition, a day earlier.

"When I was in Uganda for the previous LID, delegates were already focusing on how to go into downstream economic activities, therefore the thirst for innovation and knowledge is strong (and) we can share our expertise especially in agriculture," he said.

By using LID as a platform, Maximus said it was an opportunity for Malaysia to showcase its innovation and services both in the public and private sector and to spur the whole movement of innovation and creative thinking into the lifestyle of people.

"In terms of innovation and technology, the African region is a huge region, and there is future for this region, especially for investors looking at returns derived from the products of science, technology and innovation," he said.

He said the Southern Africa region also presented potential business opportunity in terms of collaboration avenue for Malaysia.

Maximus also noted that although "some African countries are well behind us in many aspect, they have become very conscious that to catch up with the rest of the world, they need technology to propel themselves forward."

He said that sustained economic growth could only come from developments from science and technology, generating improved patents, products and services, all of which were possible through innovation.

"Malaysia has come a long way in terms of science, technology and
innovation, and I believe we can share with the delegates the government's plan of action in terms of the Economic Transformation Programme (ETP), along with the National Key Result Areas (NKRAs) and National Key Economic Areas (NKEAs)," he said.

He said the ministry wants to offer delegates a piece of Malaysia that they can take home while locals can also learn and share experiences with them during the coming LID.

"However, innovation does not only come from science and technology, but also the partnership between the government, the private sector and the public, must support growth and implement economic plan of actions fluidly," he said.

Forming a partnership with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) has roped in more than 100 exhibitors from the private sector, government agencies and universities to parade the technological capabilities Malaysia has achieved.

Interested members of the public are also welcomed to visit the exhibition to be held during the five-day LID, beginning June 18.
