HDC WANTS MORE PLAYERS TO BENEFIT FROM PERKS TO BOOST HALAL SECTOR

By Prem Kumar Panjamorthy

KUALA LUMPUR, June 17 (Bernama) -- Halal Industry Development Corp wants
the incentives to promote the halal industry to be widened to include more
firms.

Its managing director/chief executive officer, Jamil Bidin, said
currently, tax breaks of up to ten years and duty exemption on the import of raw
materials were only given to some 1,500 companies operating in the 20 halal
parks.

Jamil said the halal industry players expected the incentive system to be
expanded to include more firms in the coming Budget 2012.

"Being in the forefront in the promotion of the halal industry globally, the
country should widen the current incentives to include more industry players,"
he told Bernama in an interview.

He said HDC statistics showed that the country has over 4,000 companies
(inclusive of the 1,500 who received the incentives) operating in the halal
parks.

"This shows that 2,500 are not getting the incentives and this has hampered
them from growing further," he said.

Jamil said HDC had discussed the matter with the government and expected
positive outcome in 2012 budget.

On another note, Jamil said Malaysia provided a holistic and comprehensive
approach in the development of the halal industry.

He said it was wrong for some parties to compare Malaysia and Thailand in
terms of advancement and productivity in the halal industry, citing recent
reports of Thailand overtaking Malaysia in the industry, which Malaysia
initially started in the region 35 years ago.

"Unlike Thailand, Malaysia is way better in all other segments of the
industry such as halal cosmetics and personal care, pharmaceutical as well as
halal ingredients.

"Other than that, we have a halal ecosystem that focuses on manufacturing
and support services such as certification, logistics, Islamic banking, standard
development and research and development," he said.

HDC was set up in 2006. It coordinates the overall development of the halal
industry in Malaysia.

It focuses on the development of halal standards, audit and certification,
capacity building for halal products and services, promotes participation and
facilitates growth of Malaysian companies in the global halal market.
