Kia Motors union rejects tentative wage deal

SEOUL, Sept. 11 (Yonhap) -- Union workers at Kia Motors Corp. on Thursday rejected a tentative wage agreement with the company's management that could have ended a series of partial strikes that have affected the carmaker.

The deal ironed out on Wednesday called for a 5.6 percent raise in the basic
monthly salary, a bonus equivalent to three months of salary and a lump-sum
payment of three million won (US$2,730).

In addition, Kia agreed to a one-year increase in the retirement age, making it
59, and the abolishment of the all-night shift from September next year.

However, "The agreement did not get the necessary votes by rank-and-file
workers," said a union representative.

He said that talks with management will resume after the three-day Chuseok
holiday that begins Saturday.

Kia is an affiliate of Hyundai Motor Co., the sixth-largest carmaker in the world.
