Forty Russians tourists recovering from infection at Greek resort.
MOSCOW, June 19 (Itar-Tass) - The exact cause that led to the
poisoning of 40 Russian tourists in the Halkidiki half-island in Greece
will be known early next week.
"The Russian Tourist Agency hopes to get all the information on the
poisoning early next week," the agency's press secretary Oleg Moiseyev
told Itar-Tass.
He said that preliminary diagnosis was gastroenteritis caused by
airborne infection. He added that none of the tourists had to be
hospitalised, all medical aid was being provided in the hotel and that the
tourists were feeling better.
The attache of the Greek Embassy in Russia, Mr. Pavlos Murmas, said
that tourist operators had talked to the hotel's owner and general
director who told them that according to preliminary medical and
laboratory tests there was no epidemic. He said that the quality of food
or drinking water couldn't be the cause behind the poisoning.
Mr. Murmas who's the director of the Greek national tourist office in
Russia said that the situation had been taken under control. "There have
been no new outbreaks of the infection. The patient's health is back to
normal. They continue their vacation in a normal regime," Murmas went on
to say.
Approximately 40 tourists from Russia as well as several vacationers
from Belarus and Germany felt bad in the Greek half-island of Halkidiki on
June 15. Doctors and representatives of the Muzenidiz Travel tourist
operator visited them on June 16.
