Uruguayan Official: Global Peace Needs Cooperation with Iran

TEHRAN (FNA)- A senior Uruguayan military official underlined his country's shared views with Iran, and said that the two countries can increase their cooperation to establish durable peace in the world.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran and Uruguay share the same views and move in the same direction towards establishment of sustainable peace in the world," President of Uruguay's Military School General Juan Saavedra said in a meeting with Iranian Ambassador to Montevideo Hojjatollah Soltani.

"We are certain that Iran and Uruguay, in addition to their cooperation in the cultural, economic and political fields, will more than ever cooperate in establishing peace which is a basic principle," he added.

Since taking office in 2005, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has expanded Iran's cooperation with many Latin American states, including Venezuela, Cuba and Uruguay.

In January 2011, the Iranian president met with the visiting Speaker of Uruguay's House of Representative Ivonne Passada here in Tehran.

"Iran and Uruguay can move towards the further expansion of relations through recognizing and emphasizing their common points," Ahmadinejad stressed during the meeting.

During Passada's Tehran visit, Iran and Uruguay signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on boosting parliamentary cooperation between the two states.
