S. Korea beats Jordan 3-1 in Olympic football qualifier
SEOUL, June 19 (Yonhap) -- South Korea defeated Jordan 3-1 in the first leg of their second-round Olympic football qualification series here Sunday.
At Seoul World Cup Stadium, midfielder Yoon Bitgaram broke a 1-1 deadlock with a penalty in the 75th minute, and Kim Dong-sub scored on a header in the 85th for the final margin.
Kim Tae-hwan drew the penalty when he was brought down by goalkeeper Feras Emad Saleh Salem on a drive. Yoon calmly put the ball to just inside the right post, as the home team erased a 1-0 first-half deficit.
Kim, second-half substitute, put the game out of reach for the visitors, heading in a Yoon cross on a free kick chance.
The second leg of the home-and-away series is Thursday in Amman, at 6 p.m. local time and midnight Korean time.
The aggregate score will determine the winner. If the teams end up with the same number of goals after two games, the first tiebreaker will be the "away goals rule," in which the team with more goals on the road will be declared the winner.
If the teams are still tied, they will go to extra time in the second leg, followed by a penalty shootout if necessary.
On Sunday, Jordan struck first just before halftime. Mahmoud Saleem Mahmoud Za'tara intercepted a pass in midfield, drove to the top of the box, and fooled defender Kim Yong-kwon before rolling it out of reach of diving goalkeeper Ha Kang-jin.
But Kim Tae-hwan tied the score in the 54th minute. After a cross from Yun Suk-young went off one of Ji Dong-won's legs near the penalty spot, Kim beat scrambling Jordanian defenders to the loose ball.
South Korea turned more aggressive after the equalizer, even as Jordan tried to slow down the game, with players going down and writhing in pain after colliding with South Koreans.
South Korea was sloppy on defense in the first half. It was Yun Suk-young's careless cross that led to Jordan's opening goal, and the score could easily have been more lopsided had Jordan been able to capitalize on other miscues.
There are 24 teams in total in the second round. The 12 winners of the second round will be paired into three groups of four in the third round.
Only the top-ranked countries from those three groups will secure automatic berths to the London Games, while the winner of a three-way playoff among No. 2 seeds will enter an international playoff for a final chance to qualify.
South Korea is seeking its seventh straight Olympic appearance but has never won a football medal at the quadrennial competition. It has made it out of the first round only twice in eight appearances overall.
