STX inks MOU with Russian firm on U$1 bln shipyard project
SEOUL (Yonhap) - STX Group, a South Korean shipbuilding and shipping conglomerate, said Monday that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with a Russian firm to build a shipyard in Russia.
Under the US$1 billion deal with OAO United Shipbuilding Corp., STX Group will design and construct the shipyard in Russia, the group said.
STX has been seeking to jointly build shipyards in Brazil and the United Arab Emirates. The group has 18 shipyards in eight countries, including South Korea and China.
Earlier this month, STX Offshore & Shipbuilding Co., one of its shipbuilding units, won a $400 million deal from SCF Sovcomflot of Russia to build two liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers.
The Russian firm has an option to place an additional order for two LNG carriers, which will boost the value of the contract to $800 million, it added.
