Afghan DM Urges Cooperation with Iran to Enhance Security in Region

TEHRAN (FNA)- Afghan Defense Minister Rahim Wardak in a meeting with his Iranian counterpart Brigadier General Ahmad Vahidi underlined his country's willingness to increase defense and security cooperation with Tehran, saying that such cooperation will promote regional security.
"Given to threats and challenges facing the region, we believe that joint defense and security cooperation between Iran and Afghanistan is very important for establishing peace and security in the region," Wardak said on Sunday.

He made the remark after signing an Iran-Afghanistan security cooperation deal with his Iranian counterpart in the Afghan capital, Kabul.

Wardak added that Afghanistan is trying to increase its defense and security ties with the Islamic Republic to "fulfill our joint security objectives in the region."

"We believe that expansion of joint defense and security cooperation with Iran is in favor of our interests," he further explained.

The Iranian defense minister arrived in Kabul on Saturday for a two-day visit at the invitation of his Afghan counterpart.
